An Approach, Not a Method
"Presentation Zen is an approach, not a method. Method implies a step-by-step, systematic, planned, and linear process. Method suggests a definite and proven procedure that you can pick off a shelf and follow from A to Z in a logical, orderly fashion. As as approach, Presentation Zen suggests a road, a direction, a frame of mind - perhaps even a philosophy - but not a formula of proven rules to be followed by all in the same way."
This handful of sentences from Presentation Zen's first chapter is where I became instantly hooked. This brilliantly encapsulates the way we all should be looking at presentations, but don't. We look for boxes to check, we want to fulfill the requirements and make that equal success. We do everything we can to unconsciously prevent the growth of any connection between ourselves and the audience.
Reynolds effortlessly guides you through his high level approach of Preparation, Design and Delivery, giving you a myriad of tools to add to your presentation toolbelt, to create the aforementioned connections. Practical tools, tools that can be added and incorporated with ease, for anyone. The book is full of graphical examples and quotes that are thought provoking. In particular, there are many books cited as sources, which is greatly appreciated. I imagine that everyone will find aspects of the book very intriguing and there will be plenty of follow-up material available for a deeper dive.
As the ultimate compliment, I initially ordered this book for my iPad. I'm now placing the order for two physical copies as Presentation Zen deserves a place on my bookshelf, as a reference, and it's going to be a great Christmas gift. I can already tell that this book will age well and is definitely going to go through some wear and tear, there is that much material that is worthwhile for anyone that does presentations.
Changed my presentation style
This book was recommended to me by a business colleague. I expected a good book, but this has made an amazing difference in how I plan and write presentations. Well worth the money.
Stop doing boring presentations.
This dramatically improves presentations if you follow the guidelines. At the same time it leaves plenty of room for creative freedom.
Essential book for public speaking
The essential book/guide for public speaking. Great resource for anyone preparing a speech or presentation—students or professionals. Very useful for entrepreneurs building pitch decks as well. I own both editions and reread/review them regularly.
Worth time and money.
This book has great ideas on how to deliver and develop better presentations. I just wish it had an audio version also.
