Over the past few years of doing this show, I’ve made a whole new bunch of friends. Honestly, some guests I would call ‘acquaintances’, but for others, we’ve either become new friends because of the show or they were friends before the interview and then agreed to come on the show. This week’s episode is maybe one of the best examples of this latter category–Ann Emery and I have been friends for, well, a long time now. And it is really my fault that I haven’t had her as a guest on the show until now. But now it is, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy our chat.

Ann’s travel around the world has brought her into contact with different cultures and societies, languages, and norms. As a public speaker and teacher, she has picked up some ‘rules of the road’ for doing a better job communicating with different groups. I’m sure you’ll find a number of nuggets of wisdom from this week’s episode.

Ann K. Emery is a sought-after speaker who is determined to get your data out of spreadsheets and into stakeholders’ hands. Each year, she leads more than 50 workshops, webinars, and keynotes for thousands of people with the aim of equipping organizations to visualize data more effectively.

Her design consultancy also overhauls graphs, publications, and slideshows with the goal of making technical information easier to understand for non-technical audiences. Prior to launching her own company, Ann measured the impact of public policy projects at Innovation Network; managed an internal evaluation system at the Latin American Youth Center; and evaluated educational programs at ICF International. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and a Master’s degree from George Mason University.
