One of favorite features of the newer versions of Microsoft Excel is being able to pick custom labels for the dots, bars, lines, and other shapes in your charts (I was even more excited when it came to the Mac OS months later). In this short video, I show you how to use the Value From Cells data labeling option in Excel. To do so, I use the data provided by Lisa Charlotte Rost, which you can download here. This is a powerful yet unpredictable feature. I have encountered several issues with it, and I’ve had to modify my own charting techniques. Still, it is an improvement over the old way of labeling points with data from cells, which was constructing individual formulas for each data label.
It’s been around since Excel 2013 for Windows. I didn’t realize it had finally made it to Mac until I read this article.
