Last Saturday, I helped organize and run the Urban Institute’s first Data Dive. The event focused on domestic violence, primarily as it related to the lack of data that can inform research and analysis. We partnered with the Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project here in DC, who provided us with guidance and resources to set up the day. The data platform company Socrata hosted the data.

As far as I know, this is one of the first of this type of event where coders/programmers worked with policy/research folks in one room. Most Hackathons/DataDives/Codeathons/whatever-they-are-called that I’ve attended are attended by the coder folk. But here–trying to embrace Urban’s efforts to engage in sophisticated analysis and elevate the debate on policy issues–we tried to combine the policy folks with the coder folk.

I’ll have more to say on the event over the next few weeks over on the Urban Institute MetroTrends blog, but for now, here’s the Storify from Twitter from the day.
